Thomas Grünewald is principal investigator at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and Hopp-Children’s Cancer Center (KiTZ), and Professor of Translational Pediatric Sarcoma Research at the University of Heidelberg. He also serves as senior pathologist at the Institute of Pathology of the Heidelberg University Hospital, co-organizer of EuSARC conferences, and tutor of the German Academic Merit Foundation.

Before his appointments in Heidelberg in 2020, Thomas Grünewald was a PhD student at the Department of Pediatrics of the Technical University of Munich (2009-2012), postdoc at the Institut Curie Research Center in Paris (2012-2014), and Max-Eder junior research group-leader at the LMU Munich (2014-2020). His ERC-funded research combines functional genomics with various in vitro and in vivo methods to decipher disease mechanisms and uncover new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for children, adolescents, and young adults affected by sarcomas.
